One of the ways that the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is working to improve the contribution that livestock make to the livelihoods of the poor is by improving market opportunities for poor livestock keepers.
In line with this, the Markets, Gender and Livelihoods Theme works to identify opportunities for the poor to benefit from increased consumer demand for livestock and livestock products, a trend known as the 'Livestock Revolution'.
Marketing of livestock and livestock products has long been an essential pathway for income generation for the poor. Livestock markets in the developing world are growing rapidly as consumer demand for livestock products increases due to population, income and urban growth and changing patterns of food consumption in urban areas.
These trends provide real opportunities, but also significant challenges, for participation of the poor, who often face barriers such as inappropriate policies, lack of access to appropriate technologies and low capacity to comply with international quality and safety standards required by the integration of national and world markets and evolving regulatory environments.
Key to ensuring market access is developing pro-poor value chains for farmers’ livestock products to provide the ‘pull’ and delivery of inputs and services to provide the ‘push’ as farmers intensify their production to meet market opportunities.
