    Abstract/Description
This article attempts to evaluate the current state of knowledge on questions such as, to what extent is inheritance important and how is it influenced by environmental factors; what are the mechanisms underlying increased resistance; and how productive are these breeds under various levels of challenge and in different management and ecological situations, leaning heavily on the authors' own experience with cattle and inbred strains of mice.
