Notes
Engineers at the Indian Institute of Technology in NewDelhi have come up with plans to use hard cakes of rice husk costing the equivalent of 12 (US) cents each as cooking fuel.
An experiment in Nepal has shown that two of these cakes can provide enough heat to cook two meals for six persons. According to Mr Diwerak Chand, who is in charge of the programme, the cakes produce heat but very little smoke and pollution. They are very easy to light and their ashes can be used to clean tools. A production plant will be built in Kathmandu at a cost of US $ 173,000.
