In an effort to increase its agricultural production, Tanzania has launched a programme to design and manufacture simple farm machinery. One of its first products was a manually-operated rice thresher, developed at the Tanzania Engineering and Manufacturing Design Organization (TEMDO) in Arusha. This thresher, with an output of 115 kgs per hour, was adapted from existing designs used in Malaysia, the Philippines and China. It is made of wood so that the village artisan can repair or replace worn parts. The thresher is being tested in five rice-growlng regions, and TEM DO is awaiting field results before encouraging local manufacturers to begin commercial production.en_US
