Coconut trees can now be protected from defoliation by an annual treatment using a recently developed root absorption technique. A root about one metre from the trunk is incised, a systemic pesticide is injected, and the opening is then closed. The sap carries the insecticide throughout the plant, including the leaves, effectively impregnating it with a durable protection against insects. This technique not only reduces both the number of treatments and the amount of pesticide needed but also spares natural predators. The only drawback is the twomonth waiting period after treatment to avoid any contamination of the fruit. Similar research is underway to see if root-absorbed pesticides can be used to protect oil palms and cacao.
