The Desertification Action Centre of UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) has just established a network of NGOs to help in its fight against deforestation and desertification in Asia, including the Pacific islands. An electronic communication system will link the different NGOs, thus enabling them to exchange rapidly data and other information in order to improve the coordination of their activities. They will also have access to a database on the characteristics of tropical forests and on related development projects. There will also be a survey of those projects that have been particularly successful in enabling better management of such resources.
