A new agricultural information agency, SYFIA (Systeme Francophone d'lnformation Agricole) is linking 30 francophone countries from the developing world. It aims to maximize the effectiveness of their work done in the fields of development and research. SYFIA's approach is new in that it draws directly on a network of Third World journalists and processes their raw information at a 'clearinghouse' in Montpellier's 'Agropolis Park' and at a Paris branch. There it is supplemented and edited in a manner geared directly to the needs of the end-user - initially some of the 80 organs of the popular press of the Third World. In future, more specific targets, and the press of the North, will receive information processed by SYFIA, again using the existing media. SYFIA hopes to create new cooperation between media and public of the North and South, and even to create new media within the Third World. SYFIA springs from the summits of francophone heads of state in Paris and Quebec, and at present operates with funding from the Agence de Cooperation Culturelle et Technique (ACCT) in Paris.
