New ways of processing cassava roots are providing a growing international market for the crop as a food for shrimps.]' is proving useful as a shrimp feed because cassava starch s~ranules are elongated and provide agglutinant properties to hold feed pellets together. Imported, reportedly toxic, agglutinants are replaced to the benefit of shrimps, farmers and the Iocal economy. The techniques for drying cassava and incorporating it into shrimp feed have teen developed in Ecuador, which has become the world's largest exporter of pond-raised shliInp. The precise ingredients remain a secret of ABA, the largest shrimp food manufacturing company in Ecuador, but formulations are known to consist approximately of: 2,5-5% pure cassava starch, 5-10% cassava flour, and up to 25% by-products of cassava starch production.
