This is a resource book for promoting the exploitation and consumption of food plants in arid semi-arid and sub-humid lands of Eastern Africa. It lists and describes a selection of 110 plant species which are used as food in Africa, with the objective of extending their potential nutritional benefits The selection was made by an FAO working group on the basis of the following criteria: potential contribution to food supply during the hungry season; equency of use; potential for further development; and their potential nutritional contribution to the diet in terms of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals.
