Recent developments in information technology have enabled KlT (the Royal Tropical Institute of the Netherlands) to provide libraries and other Information centres with direct access to its databases on tropical agriculture and rural development, allowing immediate entry via a relatively cheap and locally accessible compact disk. The compact disk can supply approximately 70,000 abstracts (equivalent to more than 35,000 pages of text) as published by KIT in its journals Abstracts on Tropical Agriculture (ATA) and Abstracts on Rural Development in the Tropics (Rural). KlT abstracts on disk provide valuable information of practical interest to agriculture and rural development workers in tropical and subtropical areas. The information can now be accessed directly and rapidly in user-friendly ways by any organisation with an IBM-compatible PC with at least a 512-Kbyte memory, at least one floppy disk drive and preferably a hard disk of ten or more Mbytes. Information can be sought by either the information specialist or the scientific researcher.
