One hundred and thirty experts from 41 Asian and European countries and international organizations met at Bad Durkheim, Germany in February 1989, to share experiences and report on research progress in the field of integrated pest management (IPM) in tropical and subtropical regions. The conference was organized by the German Agricultural Society (DLG). Eight working groups devoted their time to, and made recommendations on, such topics as: IPM in cereals,- IPM in vegetable tubers,- IPM in other tropical commodities,- training, extension and communication, biological control methods, natural and chemical pesticides, intercropping, cultural measures and weed control,- storage seed and quarantine. Although the concept of IPM was developed in the Sixties and much research has already been done, the overall impression was that IPM is not yet fully accepted by governments and crop protection divisions within the Ministries of Agriculture. The 95 papers presented at the conference contained striking examples, sound ideas, valuable experience, practical advice and many recommendations on integrated pest management. Thev will soon be published in CTA's series of seminar and conference proceedings. CTA PO Box 380 6700 A J Wageningen THE NETHERLANDS
