No-one can learn publishing from a book It is learned by doing, and many people fail drastically in the doing of it. However, a new edition of the 1966 'vademecum', Datus C. Smith Jr's 'A guide to book publishing' was issued in April 1989, and it will at least help lead potential publishers through the minefield of bringing out and marketing books. The guide aims to describe each part of the publishing operation in simple terms. The areas covered are editorial preparation, production, promotion, and distribution. The publisher's relationship with author, printers, booksellers, librarians, and educators is studied, and the economics of the enterprise presented in a layman's terms. Special attention is given to the problems of publishing in developing countries, where technology is less advanced, although the book is intended for beginners everywhere. It is a nicely produced book: it had to be really. The typeface adds clarity, the lay-out is good. There is a comprehensive index and a useful bibliography divided according to subject.
