The Mann Library of Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has received a grant to identify the core literature of the agricultural sciences. The increased spread of information technology in the Third World and the distribution of CD-ROM citation databases in libraries in developing countries have recently provided an impetus to solving the problem of access to pubIished literature. This means that the important task of sorting through the vast quantity of literature m the agricultural sciences to identify a core which will be of use to researchers, academics, advanced students, and policymakers has to he broached This work will identify appropriate titles for full text entry onto compact disks for worldwide distribution. The core literature will be determined by citation analysis and other blbliometric techniques, and will be qualitatively reviewed by specialists in eight subject disciplines, corresponding to eight eventual published volumes: Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, Agricultural Engineering, Plant Sciences (basic and applied), Animal Science, Economic Entomology, Forestry and Silviculture and soil sciences.
