    Notes
CTA has recently funded the translation into French and l the publication (by Editions , Karthala) of Robert Chambers' book Rural Development: putting the last first, which was originally published in English by Longmans. 'This book is written for those who have an interest in rural poverty', Chambers declares at the outset. His aim is to 'focus attention on the 'last', on the hundreds of millions of poor who live in rural areas, unrecognized, weak, isolated, vulnerable and powerless'. This book attempts to play a part in the enormous task of changing the order of things. As such it is a work of practical sociology, and a criticism of what has gone before in the field of rural development. To read this book is to understand why so many projects and studies have missed the mark. But will the new perspectives described by Robert Chambers and the suggestions he makes, really enable the 'last to become first?' 'Learning from the poorest members of society rarely figures in projects and programmes aimed at ending poverty; but it is a vital component if the poor are to be able to improve their lot'..
