    Notes
s Raising and sustaining productivity of smallholder farm systems in the Tropics brings together much relevant knowledge on the various tropical farming systems. Its purpose is to provide a framework for agricultural development in the Tropics with emphasis on raising the overall productivity of farming system in a sustainable manner. Special emphasis is placed on the limitations imposed by natural and financial resources, and administrative or social structures. Those aspects of the agricultural production process that lend themselves to improvement are identified and the prerequistes and mechanisms of change are discussed. The effects of land-tennure and land-use, fertilizers, irrigation, cultural practices, rational crop selection, timeliness of planting, extension programmes and infrastructure all receive special emphasis. The complex subjects of this book are presented in such a way to provide each professional group with the necessary insight into the interrelationships between factors from various disciplines in the process of agricultural development. Extensive use is made of research and project experience in Africa and Asia and a balanced picture is presented by comparing this with conditions in other tropical areas.
