Notes
CTA contributed towards the production and distribution costs of the Union Catalog of serials in the International Agricultural Research Centers (lARCs) of the world. The two volumes, published by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), represent a hard copy of a microcomputer-readable database. The objective of the project was to produce a source of information that would facilitate wide and easy access to the relatively rich serials resources of the lARCs for the benefit of users in the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) of the developing world.
Scientific and technical journals, and other serials, are undoubtedly valuable sources of information on agricultural research and development. Access to such sources is essential for the conduct of research, and for the avoidance of wasteful effort in lARCs and NARSs. Unfortunately, however, many NARSs are seriously handicapped for lack of resources, particularly in hard currency, to subscribe to costly scientific, technical and other serials. It has therefore become imperative that lARCs and NARSs should cooperate with each other to share serials resources so that access to needed information in research, problem solving and development is better facilitated. The present Union Catalog of Serials Holdings in lARCs is aimed at fulfilling this objective.
