| dcterms.description | The International Council for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) has developed a database to help the choice of the best species of tree or shrub to grow in a given set of circumstances. The database contains invaluable information on over 1100 species.
During the last six years ICRAF has collected information from researchers, farmers pastoralists and others who have had contact with potential agroforesty species. Now the database IS available to any organization or institution that can use it.
If the name of a particular species is entered into the database, it will offer a complete profile of that species. In its second function a number of parameters, including climate soil type and the intended use, are entered and the computer then searches through the 1100 species for those that fit the criteria. If the list is too long it can be reduced by making each parameter more and more specific.
ICRAF expects the database to be used by ministries of agriculture and extension offices although the particular requests might come from the farmers and pastoralists themselves.
