This book is a collection of abstracts and findings of an international workshop held on the subject in Harare, Zimbabwe, in March 1988. Though the dominant cereal in the SADCC region is maize, sorghum and millets are traditional and important, particularly in dry areas. Research to improve these crops is recent compared to that for maize wheat, soybeans and tobacco. The disease situation is of concern downy mildew is found widely in the region and leaf diseases are severe in some areas. Grain moulds and Striga are also of concern. But progress has been made on sorghum diseases since the first global workshop held in India in 1978 and this is reviewed in the book. Research needs and goals for the next decade are identified; and the strengthening of working relationships among pathologists studying sorghum and millets diseases are discussed. Recommendations ma de by workshop participant; and reports on group discussions are also included.
