| dcterms.description | As populations in most developing countries continue to increase, the amount of animal protein available for them to eat will decline. Vegetables, which already play a major role in diet, will become increasingly important sources of protein. A balanced supply of cereals or tuber crops, pulses and leaf vegetables can reduce to a minimum the need to consume animal proteins, without adversely affecting health.
The tropical vegetable garden covers a very wide range of vegetables, the effects of climate and soils, the principles of plant physiology, plant breeding and plant protection and cultivation techniques.
Originally published in French by CTA under the title Le potager tropical, this translation has been published jointly by Macmillan and CTA. The book is primarily written for diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate students of tropical agriculture or horticulture and researchers. It will also be a useful and interesting source of reference for extension workers, agricultural teachers and schools throughout the tropics and subtropics.
