    Notes
Large dams generate 19% of global electricity production, provide water for 12 to 16% of world food production, and have displaced between 40 and 80 million people. Their role should be better restricted and channelled. In the future, all stakeholders should review plans from the perspective of rights and risks , the World Commission on Dams concluded in February 2000 after a two-year review, urging government, civil society, local populations, the private sector and donors to share goals and resources. Meanwhile in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in November 2000, participants at the Eau et Santé (Water and health) seminar urged more study of the negative impact on health and hygiene by small-scale dams installed for agricultural purposes.
