An international symposium on Systems oriented research in agriculture and rural development was held in Montpellier, France, in November 1994. It was the thirteenth to be held under the auspices of the Association for Farming Systems Research and Extension and was attended by 700 participants from 70 countries.
The symposium was an opportunity for those working in agricultural research and development around the world to meet and exchange ideas in the light of current environmental and political challenges and to consider what concepts, approaches and methodologies should be put in place in order to respond to those challenges.
