Trials conducted by IITA in lbadan, Nigeria have shown that the grey fungus, Cercospora sojina, reduces yields of soya by as much as 65% in susceptible varieties. With the disease under control, soya could produce higher levels of protein for human and animal food and a cheaper source of much-needed cooking oil.
Chemical control by benomyl inhibits the incidence of the disease but scientists have shown that disease-resistant cultivars can be left untreated by fungicides without affecting yields. Genetic resistance to Cercospora sojina is therefore considered to be the most promising route to increased soya production.
