    Notes
Trials conducted by IITA in lbadan, Nigeria have shown that the grey fungus, Cercospora sojina, reduces yields of soya by as much as 65% in susceptible varieties. With the disease under control, soya could produce higher levels of protein for human and animal food and a cheaper source of much-needed cooking oil. Chemical control by benomyl inhibits the incidence of the disease but scientists have shown that disease-resistant cultivars can be left untreated by fungicides without affecting yields. Genetic resistance to Cercospora sojina is therefore considered to be the most promising route to increased soya production. IITA Oyo Road PMB 532, Ibadan, NIGERIA
