| dcterms.description | The Pesticides Trust is an environmental charity established in includes in its membership a wide range of interests - environmental, food and consumer, farming and horticulture, conservation, wildlife, medical, health and safety and development organizations, all of whom have long-standing concerns about pesticide issues.
The Trust works closely with the world-wide Pesticides Action Network (PAN), which links 300 groups in over 50 countries. Together they try to find solutions to pesticide problems and to develop effective action to reduce pesticide risks. However, The Pesticides Trust is not indiscriminately opposed to pesticides, some of which may be necessary to increase food production and to control disease vectors.
The Trust has several aims: to create awareness, among those who make decisions, over the use and regulation of pesticides and, among workers and users, of the problems associated with pesticides; to provide a forum for discussion of the issues and to help coordinate action to tackle problems; to provide information about pesticides; and to stimulate and promote the implementation of ecologically sound, less pesticide-dependent methods and products in agriculture, vector control and other areas of pest control.
The pesticides Trust's recent work includes providing the evidence for pesticide reduction policies; with the Pesticides Action Network the Trust collated examples of pesticide use and abuse in 17 developing countries and the impact of the FAO Code of conduct on the distribution and use of pesticides which it submitted to the relevant United Nations organizations. The Trust is developing a project on pesticide use in cotton, is monitoring European pesticide exports and is working to provide alternatives to pesticides for local authorities. It also provides consultancy services to the European Commission and other agencies.
The Pesticides Trust produces Pesticides news and Current research monitor which are published quarterly and provides news, features and reports on developments. Contributors include scientists, legislators, development workers, Trust staff and others with an awareness of the issues. The Trust also has a library which contains literature focusing on health and environmental aspects of pesticides and sustainable use of pest control measures in agriculture.
