The Council for Tropical and Subtropical Agricultural Research (ATSAF) was founded in Germany in 1976 as an association of scientists from Federal research institutes, German universities and other research institutions working in the field of tropical and subtropical agricultural research and related areas. The aims of ATSAF are: to promote agricultural research for a sustainable, ecologically and socioeconomically sound development of agriculture and forestry in tropical and subtropical countries; to increase the contribution made by the Federal Republic of Germany and its research institutes in this field; and to increase public awareness of problems and questions related to international agricultural research. One of ATSAF's principal concerns is the initiation and promotion of cooperation in research by the establishment of research contacts and the coordination of research activities. ATSAF also aims to increase public awareness of issues related to international agricultural research, and to improve information and communication in the field of tropical and subtropical agricultural research. To achieve this ATSAF offers a number of services, which include: publication of the bi-lingual (German and English) quarterly ATSAF-Circular, which informs scientists at home and abroad about current developments in the field of tropical and subtropical agricultural research; collaboration in the publication of the quarterly newsletter (English) published by the European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) which reports on national and international developments in tropical forest research; establishment and maintenance of an expert database with information about German scientists working in tropical and subtropical agricultural research and related fields; establishment and management of a collection of documents with current literature from the international agricultural research centres and from other research institutions; and provision of information about current developments in the international and agricultural research centres to those interested in development policies, by arranging lectures of scientists from these centres.
