As part of a government crossbreeding programme to increase milk production, small dairy farmers in Byumba in northern Rwanda received 85 Jersey heifers with young in June 2002. Another 85 heifers arrived in early July. Supported by the USA-based Heifer Project International, the programme had already distributed 88 heifers to Rwandan farmers in 2001. The cows produce 15 to 20 litres of milk per day.en_US
