The Sesbania sesban tree is a promising agroforestry species for improving the traditional practice of letting fallow land restore itself. A so-called 'improved fallow' tree, it is fast growing and has deep roots which speed up the return of nutrients to the topsoil. It can also reduce erosion, suppress weeds, create shade, and provide fuelwood and medicine. In a 10-year project in Chipata, Zambia, there were dramatic improvements in maize yield after 2 or 3 years of Sesbania sesban improved fallow. The technology can now be widely disseminated. Sesbania improved fallows for eastern Zambia is not a 'how to' manual for farmers or grassroots extension services, but guidelines for mid-level extension, training and education staff with English.
