It contains: packaging has to conform to certain rules (such as showing the exact mass or volume of the contents). This is now spreading towards smaller portions, for an individual's or a day's consumption (such as individually packaged stock cubes, which provide portions for use).
It protects: against contamination or pollution. A recent FAO report states that improvements in packaging and care could reduce post-harvest losses by 5%, resulting in increased food supply of 39 million tonnes annually.
It informs: labelling on packaging tells the consumer about the ingredients, quantities and life of the product, as well as how to eat it and serve it up.
It attracts: the visual presentation of a product helps to keep consumer's attention and interest.
