Notes
The world market for peanuts is growing, but not for everyone. Often groundnuts are contaminated by powerful toxins (aflatoxins) produced by two types of fungus (Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus). They can bring on allergies and induce cancer in poultry. The European Union recently drew up new legislation fixing the acceptable limits of aflatoxins in certain foodstuffs. With the countries of the EU being the major market for African groundnut farmers, the Union is financing a project to modernise the peanut branch in Senegal. Control measures will be set up against contamination throughout the production and marketing process, and a 'Peanuts of Senegal' certificate will be created. Control facilities will be strengthened, and quality control introduced. The National Groundnuts Council, the Food Technology Institute and the Société générale de surveillance (SGS) of Senegal are being partnered by the French CIRAD and Wolff laboratories.
