| dcterms.description | The Group for Assistance on Systems Relating to Grain After-Harvest (GASGA) is an association of organizations whose members are dedicated to the improvement of grain post-harvest systems throughout the developing world. The membership of GASGA is made up of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement (CIRAD), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) the German Agency for Technical Aid (GTZ) and the Natura) Resources Institute (NRI).
The aim of GASGA is to identify and tackle post-harvest problems starting from the field and going on through to storage and processing. This is achieved through providing professional advice; managing field projects; researching post-harvest problems; training personnel from developing countries; and identifying and developing new areas relevant to the post-harvest sector. One way that GASGA achieves this is by calling ad hoc conferences on topical subjects, the most recent of which was the GASGA International Conference on Grain Drying in Asia (1995).
GASGA responds to requests from developing countries seeking technical advice on grain post-harvest problems and also advises and assists donors in identifying priorities for development in the post-harvest sector. In addition, GASGA supports developing countries, donors and other interested organizations by collecting, evaluating and disseminating information about technical developments. Examples of this are the annual technical seminars which have addressed grain post-harvest issues, the most recent of which were Policy issues in the small grains sector of Southern Africa; Monitoring and evaluation methods for innovation in grain post-harvest sector; Private enterprise and the post-harvest sector; and Systems approach to the post-harvest sector. GASGA also publishes a bi-annual Newsletter that reports on grain post-harvest activities.
