On-farm research has become and integral part of the work of most national and international research institutes. However, many researchers remain unfamiliar with the techniques available to enable them to draw reliable conclusions from on-farm trials. In the circumstances it was thought necessary to bring out a new edition, completely revised and updated, of the manual previously titled A field guide for on-farm research. The book emphasises the experimental aspects of on-farm research, which should help on-farm researchers to arrive at solid conclusions, taking into account, rather than eliminating, variation among farmers. The book is intended for researchers, university lectures, policy makers and extension service managers.
