New topics, new titles In collaboration with Macmillan, CTA has co-published three more titles in the popular Tropical Agriculturalist Series, Ruminant nutrition, Food legumes and Cocoa. Ruminant nutrition covers the theory and principles of the subject, with a chapter about each of the main nutrient groups, and discusses economic production of cattle, sheep, goats and other ruminants. The author brings together findings from many sources and applies them to conditions in the tropics. He explains such basic principles as, for example, the composition of the animal and its food in terms of simple chemical analysis, and enables the reader to understand how diets are formulated for animals kept under tropical conditions. The publishers, recognizing the importance of food legumes to the nutrition of the population of most tropical countries, decided that a publication should be devoted to a study of their cultivation. Food legume' looks at the ten species which are considered to be the most important leguminous food crops, particularly in Africa. Cocoa covers in detail the characteristics and requirements of the crop, how to grow it in a variety of tropical zones, harvesting and drying techniques and preparation of the commercial product. In addition to this practical information, the author has in eluded a short but fascinating history of cocoa growing and an assesment of some of the problems facing the industry today.
