We have received three books published with the same objective: how to achieve sustainable development in Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe's environmental dilemma the authors identify the wide array of problems and argue for an indigenous perspective on environmental sustainability. They argue strongly that the only way to avert ecological disaster is to introduce major land reform. Written specifically for the UNCED conference in Brazil last year. The case for sustainable development in Zimbabwe; conceptual problems, conflicts and contradictions expands the idea of environmental sustainability to include the sustainability of the human resource. There must be enough jobs, land, food and energy to meet people's basic needs. The problems of poverty are central to those of environmental protection. In Introduction to permaculture the author explains the basic principles of the system he developed for a sustainable agricultural system at household or community level. Practical techniques for achieving the permaculture principles form the major part of the book. These range from energy efficient site analysis to garden layouts and choice of plants and animals to integrate within the system.
