In the foreword to CTA's Annual Report for 1992, the Centre's Director points out that during the year, CTA reinforced those activities designed to increase the capabilities of the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries in the ACP Group to collect and disseminate agricultural information and to make information on improved production techniques more accessible to small-scale farmers. This strategy was reflected in the topics of the seminars organized by the Centre during 1992. For example, improving Africa's ability to produce and distribute technical books was the subject of a workshop which brought together publishers, book distributors and representatives of development agencies from North and South and from anglophone and francophone communities. The topic of the special paper included in the Annual Report concerns the subject of the workshop held in Arnhem, the Netherlands, on 'Promoting technical literature in Africa'. Walter Bgoya, Managing Director of Mkuki na Nyota Publishers in Tanzania, focuses attention on the role of technical publishing in Africa. He states that 'with increased enrolment in the formal education sector and the effectiveness of adult literacy campaigns, the demand for textbooks alone is enormous'. He asks about the ways in which the demand in this, and other technical publishing sectors, is being met and outlines possible solutions. 'The development of technical publishing in Africa' he concludes, 'requires dedication and hard work, not only from all those in the book business, but also from governments, development agencies and the international donor community.' Copies of CTA's Annual Report for 1992 are available, on request, from CTA's Headquarters in Ede or from its Pacific and Caribbean Regional Branch Offices.
