Notes
Millet, the principal food crop of the semi-arid Sahel, is attacked by all manner of pests. The interactions of these pests with each other, with the crop, the weather and various local factors give rise to widely varying effects on crop yield. The result is that the economics of control measures change from year to year and from place to place.
Millet pests of the Sahel: an identifcation guide is a pocket-sized book which uses clear colour coding and pictogram summaries to reinforce the diagnostic descriptions and full colour illustrations of the pests (weeds diseases, birds and insects) and of their characteristic damage. It is available in both English and French and will help researchers and extension specialist to make initial, on-the-spot identifications.
A companion volume, Millet pests of the Sahel: biology, monitoring and control, is a]so available which brings together up-to-date information on all the factors relating to the occurence and distribution of millet pests. Used in conjunction with the Identification Guide, the economic consequences of various control strategies can be assessed.
