Bananas and their management by Pius B Ngeze 1994 111pp ISBN 9976 982 37 2
Bananas are an important food crop in Tanzania, especially in the highlands where it is a staple contributing the largest part of the carbohydrate intake in the diet. In addition, bananas provide useful by-products for animal feed and brewing material as well as leaves for use in thatching and as ornamental objects. In the early 1970s, however, due to a lack of research into the growing of bananas, the crops began to suffer from a series of setbacks from pest and diseases. The author of the book Bananas and their management, Pius Ngeze, realized the seriousness of the situation and its implications for growers and consumers alike. He set about researching and writing this book which is intended not only for farmers and extension officers but also for school and college students. The book outlines the origin and introduction of bananas into Tanzania, and then looks at the problems of banana farming. The various types of banana are described and this is followed by several chapters on the management of banana growing, harvesting and selling. CTA has provided assistance to the Kagera Publishers for the publication in English of this book which was first published in Swahili. CTA welcomes manuscripts and publishing proposals from ACP publishers and authors. For further information address your requests to the Director.
