Useful publications The ASB-Newsletter has recently been launched by ICRAF. 'ASB' is the acronym for 'Alternatives to Slash-and-Burn'. ASB is a worldwide research and development project to reduce tropical deforestation and promote rehabilitation of deforested land by providing farmers who practice unsustainable slash-and-burn agriculture with alternative ways of using the land. ASB research is highly participatory; a joint technology-policy approach is used to seek alternatives. The newsletter will be a forum for partners in the consortium to communicate with each other, and to spread information about ASB activities around the world to others who share concerns about unsustainable slash-and-burn agriculture, and to those who are also working on finding alternatives.
