KIT press has just published a new volume in the series Development Oriented Research in Agriculture: Setting research priorities: Towards effective farmer-oriented research. Initially, there were high hopes for the farming systems approach. This appeared to be a revolutionary way to revitalise technology development and transfer, by giving farmers a voice in agricultural research; yet results have been disappointing. Setting research priorities asserts that the fundamental problem is not one of farming systems research and development principles but that implementing this approach, which at first appeared simple, is quite complex. This book combines material on management processes and useful] techniques with the practical experiences of farmer-oriented farming systems research and development projects in Benin, Central America, Indonesia, Mali, Tanzania, and Zambia. The final chapter argues that strengthening research management does not imply a need for 'control' of the research process, but that a structured approach which incorporates local knowledge and encourages participation of stockholders is needed. To make the best use of their potential, farming systems research and development projects need to increase their exposure, actively interacting with their environment. A more assertive stance, including alertness to new opportunities and constraints, plus an active search for opportunities for collaboration and other linkages, is required Conscious choices, development of strategies, and working with others to solve problems are all part of managing an interactive learning process - and getting results Setting research priorities edited by J Douwe Meindertsma 1994 263pp ISBN 90 6832 084 X KIT Press, Mauritskade 63, 1092 AD, Amsterdam, THE NETHERLANDS
