On January 8th 2003 the European Commission released a question-and-answer briefing on the BSE situation in the EU and the measures taken to combat the disease, particularly with regard to trade with third countries. It was pointed out that overall the incidence of BSE in the EU is falling, although in a few member states the number of cases is still rising in 2002. This increase in certain member states however is held to be the result of more intensive testing. It is maintained that the age profile of the infected animals is now such as to suggest that earlier measures are being effective in combating the disease.
