From January 1st 2003 new rules will enter into force on national assistance in meeting the costs related to BSE. This is deemed to be necessary since discrepancies in national funding created a serious risk of distortion of competition. The rules include: an upper limit of € 40 of total public support towards BSE tests; prohibition of state aid towards the costs of disposal of slaughterhouse waste; a limit of 50% on aid for the disposal of specified risk material; a 100% limit on aid for the costs of removal of fallen stock at farm level; a 75% limit on aid to the destruction of fallen stock at farm level.
