Following a poor harvest in certain regions of the EU in 2001/2002, which saw EU imports of wheat reach 8 million tonnes (making it the world's largest importer), some 18 million hectares has now been sown. The United States Department of Agriculture now expects EU wheat production to reach a record 107 million tonnes. It is expected that this will lead to a decrease in prices on EU markets and the pursuit of an aggressive export-refund policy by the European Commission. Comment: Increased volumes of EU wheat at heavily discounted prices can be expected on world markets in the coming year. ACP wheat producers will need to monitor developments carefully in order to ensure that local production is not undermined.
