Following the summit on sustainable development
in Johannesburg Commissioner Fischler stressed that the EU now has
to show that it is genuinely committed to making real cuts in trade-distorting
support. He stressed that this does not mean abandoning EU farmers,
but rather supporting then in ways which are less damaging to others.
He concluded that 'if we fail in this, then we risk losing support
of our own citizens for the CAP'.
