Following the summit on sustainable development in Johannesburg Commissioner Fischler stressed that the EU now has to show that it is genuinely committed to making real cuts in trade-distorting support. He stressed that this does not mean abandoning EU farmers, but rather supporting then in ways which are less damaging to others. He concluded that 'if we fail in this, then we risk losing support of our own citizens for the CAP'.en_US
