Continued sales of EU beef from intervention stocks, with only some 20,005 tonnes in cold stores by early August 2003, are reported in another article in Meat and Livestock Australia. These stocks were expected to be cleared by the end of September 2003. This compares to record levels in stock of 252,000 tonnes in 2001. However, there is also some 60,870 tonnes of 'special purchase scheme' beef in cold stores, with this being sold off only after intervention stocks have been cleared. Comment: This situation could create new market opportunities for ACP suppliers in the EU market. Indeed, it is likely to be a contributing factor to the predicted rise in EU beef prices over the coming years.
