From February 1st 2002 the EU is allowing imports of 'deboned and matured fresh bovine meat' from Argentina except from the provinces of La Pampa and Santiago del Estero. Imports had been suspended since the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in March 2001. A comprehensive vaccination programme has proved effective in eradicating foot and mouth in all but these two provinces. Comment: The lifting of the import ban preceded the increase in the Tariff Rate Quota for beef made available to Argentina as an integral part of efforts to support the ailing Argentinean economy. From an ACP perspective the decision highlights the importance of having a prompt response capacity in the case of outbreaks of animal diseases which affect its trade with the EU.
