The European Commission announced in mid-February that it would allow the payment of special national aids to beef farmers affected by the BSE crisis. These aids are primarily intended to cover the costs of BSE testing and the destruction of infected meat. Such national aids are normally not allowed because they could distort competition on the internal EU market.
