The World Bank and the International Coffee Organisation held a round table...
The World Bank and the International Coffee Organisation held a round table meeting 'Looking for Long Term Solutions' to the coffee crisis, on May 19th2003. The main focus was diversification, enhancing quality, added-value and market development. In the run up to the meeting the view was expressed that diversification was being hindered by agricultural subsidies and rich-country protectionism, both of which limit options for diversification into other crops and value addition. The background to the meeting is coffee prices which are at a 30-year low and which are now between 20% and 50% below average production costs. The executive director of the ICO claimed that 'never before have coffee-producing countries had to endure a crisis in the coffee sector of the magnitude seen in the last two years.
