Depuis les premières éruptions volcaniques dans l'île de Montserrat (Caraïbes), les cultivateurs locaux ont été contraints de se reconvertir dans la petite exploitation maraîchère, principal mode, désormais, de production agricole. La catastrophe, qui a provoqué la destruction des deux tiers de l'île, s'est traduite par la perte de la plupart des terres arables.
