Report of a meeting of the CGIAR Consultative Council meeting called on short notice on October 26, 1999, during CGIAR International Centers Week, Henri Carsalade, FAO representative to the cosponsors, presiding. The meeting addressed the succession and leadership of the CGIAR, in particular the role of Chairman Ismail Serageldin and his successor. It followed a meeting earlier that day between Henri Carsalade, CBC Chair Wally Falcon, and acting World Bank President Sven Sandstrom,. Sandstrom described the Bank's continuing commitment to the CGIAR, and an arrangement making it possible for Serageldin to remain CGIAR Chair for up to two more years. Upon his departure, he would be replaced by World Bank Vice President for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development (ESSD) Ian Johnson. The Consultative Council welcomed the World Bank commitment, and the continuation of Ismail Serageldin's chairmanship. It said consequent actions should take place through the normal structures of the CGIAR.Agenda document at the CGIAR meeting of October 1999.en_US
