Report of TAC 45 held in Rome, March 7-12, 1988, Professor Alex F. McCalla presiding at his first meeting as TAC Chairman. TAC considered a draft policy statement on plant genetic resources. It was to be revised for discussion with the center directors at TAC 46 prior to submission to the CGIAR. The creation of a joint TAC/centers working group to strengthen intercenter collaboration was endorsed. TAC approved and transmitted to the CGIAR a paper on the implications of sustainability for agricultural research by CSC II. Having completed its task, this committee was dissolved.TAC approved a vegetable initiative for consideration by the CGIAR, consisting of a research network supported by a small scientific unit. There was discussion of a draft paper on sharing responsibilities between centers and NARS, and another on private sector relationships. Various aspects of priority assessment methodology were considered, and initial steps taken on a further CGIAR priorities exercise. After extended discussion, TAC asked that the draft paper on review processes in the CGIAR be revised for consideration at TAC 46.In discussing aquaculture, TAC reiterated the criteria for new initiatives. It created an ad hoc subcommittee to prepare a proposal on aquaculture research. TAC endorsed the medium term plans of CIP and IBPGR for transmittal to the CGIAR. It held first discussions of the MTPs of CIAT, IITA, and ILCA. There was a preliminary review of ICRISAT's strategic plan, a number of issues being raised for clarification. TAC approved the final draft of WARDA's strategic plan. It appreciated the input of the FAO paper on roots and tubers, bananas, and plantains, and held a wide ranging discussion on biotechnology.
