Abstract/Description
Proceedings of a workshop intended to develop guidelines for the CGIAR's use of genetic resources, held at the instance of the CGIAR Committee on Genetic Resources Policy (GRPC) and organized by IPGRI. The workshop was held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, April 21-25, 1997.The document consists of papers delivered and brief summary reports on the public perspective of biotechnology, bioethics and equity in using genetic resources, benefit sharing, perspectives of farmers and the private sector. There are also working group reports on genetic resources preservation functions, the trusteeship and conservation role of the CGIAR, and partnerships with farmers and rural communities. A short final chapter seeks to analyze the ethical principles that emerged.Distributed at CGIAR International Centers Week, October 1997. A draft set of ethical principles relating to genetic resources drawing on these discussions is attached to the report of the GRPC to ICW97.
